Summer 2026: Why Florida's Heat Turns Small Chips Into Full Windshield Cracks Fast

Every June our phones start doing the same thing. Calls that in March would have been “I’ve got a little chip, should I worry about it?” turn into “there’s a crack across my whole windshield and it happened on the drive home.”

What the heat is actually doing

Glass expands when it heats and contracts when it cools. That’s fine when the whole pane moves together. Florida in summer doesn’t let it move together.

Park in an open lot at 1pm and the cabin climbs past 140°F while the glass bakes in direct sun. Get in, start the car, and blast the AC. Now the inside surface of the windshield is being chilled hard while the outside surface is still sitting in full sun. The two faces of the same piece of glass are pulling in opposite directions.

A perfect windshield handles that. A windshield with a chip in it has a stress concentration, a tiny notch where all that tension collects and has somewhere to go. It goes.

What we’re seeing this summer

A few patterns from our June call log across the corridor:

• Afternoon calls outnumber morning calls roughly two to one. The damage that spreads, spreads during the hottest part of the day.
• I-75 and I-4 chips dominate. Construction zones and gravel haulers do most of the initial damage. Ocala, Lakeland, and the Fort Myers stretch produce the most first-time chip calls.
• The gap between chip and crack is shrinking. In cooler months a customer might sit on a chip for weeks. In June we routinely see chips that ran the same week they appeared.

The single worst thing you can do

Aim the AC vents directly at a chipped windshield on a hot day. The thermal shock across that spot is exactly what makes it run. Start with the vents pointed down and let the cabin cool gradually.

How to keep a chip from becoming a replacement

Park in shade or use a sunshade. Boring advice, genuinely effective. Anything that keeps the glass from reaching peak temperature reduces the tension it has to survive.

Cool the car gradually. Windows down for the first minute, vents on low and aimed away from the glass, then step it up once the cabin has dumped its worst heat.

Skip the cold-water rinse. Hosing down a hot windshield is thermal shock in its purest form.

Cover the chip. A small piece of clear tape keeps dirt and water out of the break. Contaminated chips are harder to repair cleanly, and a rainy afternoon can be enough to close that door.

Get it looked at this week, not next month. A chip smaller than a quarter, outside the driver’s direct sightline and not touching the edge of the glass, is usually a twenty-minute resin repair. Let it run and you’re into a full replacement.

Repair or replace, quickly

Here’s the rough triage we use over the phone:
